Saving Languages
- Episode Coming 2026-10-01
Graphic design is not merely decorative but operates as a powerful form of cultural and linguistic activism in the fight against language extinction. The relationship between design and language is not new. Dating back to the earliest forms of writing, it is an exercise in taking a spoken language and giving it a physical shape, whether it’s inscribing on soft clay tablets, or writing on papyrus or printing on paper. Languages must be visible, used, and emotionally valued to survive, and graphic design provides the tools to make that possible. Through tools such as typography and infographics, designers can ensure visibility, foster pride, and transform endangered languages into living, public, and emotionally resonant systems. Design is an active force of resistance, revitalization, and cultural survival in the realm of language preservation.
